What Drives Drywall Repair Cost

Drywall repair cost depends on more than just the size of the hole. I'm Cindy Loya, and at The Patch Lady I handle everything from drywall spot repair to full water-damaged sections across the Denver metro. If you're staring at a hole, a crack, or a water stain and wondering whether to call a pro, the short answer is: yes, and the fix is more affordable than you're probably assuming. Call (402) 419-9658 and I'll tell you exactly what it involves.

Most small drywall repairs fall in the range of a few hundred dollars. Larger jobs involving water damage, multiple rooms, or finish-coat painting can run significantly higher. What actually moves the number are four things: the size of the damaged area, how many layers of texture need to be matched, whether there's underlying structural or moisture damage, and how much prep work the surrounding wall requires. That last one is what most people don't anticipate. A patch that's perfectly smooth and structurally sound but misses the existing orange peel or knockdown texture is still going to stick out like a sore thumb. Every job is different -- contact The Patch Lady for an accurate estimate.

Every Drywall Problem I Fix Every

From doorknob holes to full sections pulled out for plumbing work, here's what ends up on my schedule.

01

Hole Repair

Doorknobs, furniture corners, kids, accidental screw placement -- holes happen. I cut clean, back the patch properly, and tape, mud, and texture until the wall looks untouched.

02

Water Damage Drywall

Water-stained or swollen drywall has to come out before it grows mold. I remove the compromised section, check what's behind it, and replace and finish it correctly. Paired naturally with ceiling repairs when the source is overhead.

03

Crack Repair

Settling cracks along seams, corners, or tape lines aren't just cosmetic. I re-tape or skim as needed so the crack doesn't telegraph back through the next coat of paint.

04

Drywall Spot Repair

Small dings, anchor pull-outs, or shallow dents that don't go all the way through. These are quick but still require texture matching -- a smooth spot on a knockdown wall is just as visible as a hole.

05

Remodel Cut-Outs

Electricians, plumbers, and HVAC crews leave openings. I close them clean and match the surrounding finish so the patch reads as wall, not patch. Especially common during residential remodeling work.

06

Popcorn and Texture Removal

Old popcorn ceilings, skip trowel, or orange peel you want to change entirely. I can remove and re-texture to a flat or new finish -- or match whatever you've got on the adjacent walls.

How It Works

Three Steps to an Invisible Repair

The process is straightforward. What's not simple is getting every step right.

  1. 01

    Assess and Prep

I look at the damage, check what's behind it, and protect your floors and nearby surfaces before I touch anything. No surprises mid-job.

  2. 02

    Patch, Tape, and Finish

Proper backing, the right compound, the right number of coats. I don't rush the mud -- each layer has to dry completely before the next one goes on. This is where most DIY repairs fall apart.

  3. 03

    Texture Match and Clean Up

This is the step that separates a patch from a seamless repair. I match your existing texture -- orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, smooth -- then clean the site completely before I leave.

The Promise

What Every Job Includes

Across 8 five-star Google reviews, the same things come up every time: clean site, clear communication, work that holds up. That's not a slogan -- it's what the people who hired me actually said.

Texture matched to your existing wall
Orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, popcorn, smooth -- named and matched exactly
Site protected before work starts
Floors covered, dust contained -- your home stays clean throughout
Complete cleanup before I leave
Debris, dust, and materials out the door -- not left for you to deal with
Clear communication from estimate to finish
You know what's happening, when, and why -- no chasing me down for updates

When to Call Instead of DIY

  1. 01

    Water Was Involved

If the drywall got wet -- from a leak, a burst pipe, a slow drip -- don't just dry it and patch over it. Wet drywall can harbor mold behind the surface where you can't see it. Pull the section, check what's behind it, and replace it properly.

  2. 02

    The Texture Has to Match

Smooth walls are forgiving. Textured walls are not. If your home has orange peel, knockdown, or any other applied texture, a patch that doesn't match is more obvious than the original hole. Texture matching is a skill -- honestly, most handymen can't do it convincingly.

  3. 03

The Damage Is Bigger Than a Sheet of Paper

Small holes patch cleanly. Anything larger than roughly 6 inches needs proper backing, tape, and multiple coat applications. A repair that skips steps will crack, bubble, or show the seam within a few months.

I can't recommend this company enough. If you're looking for someone who truly cares about the job, attention to detail, and not cutting corners, Cindy is your person. With my bathroom renovation there was a team of 3 from a different company that came in to finish drywall and did such a poor job, I took a chance on Cindy to fix it all and she did just that. Quickly and efficiently, and she cleans up so well too! If you're looking for someone to do the job right the first time, call The Patch Lady! I will use her for any jobs moving forward.

Questions About Drywall Repair

Don’t see your question here? Call and ask — you’ll reach a real person who can talk it through.

Call (402) 419-9658
Which is better for drywall repair -- joint compound or spackle?
Depends on the repair. Spackle dries faster and works fine for small dings and nail holes. Joint compound is the right call for anything involving tape, a patch panel, or a repair that needs to be feathered over a larger area. I use joint compound for almost everything I do because the repairs I'm making need to last and blend -- not just fill. Spackle shrinks as it dries and can crack in bigger repairs.
What counts as a small drywall repair?
Generally, anything under 6 inches in diameter. Small repairs don't need backing material -- a patch kit or mesh tape and compound can handle them. Anything larger needs a proper backer board or California patch to give the new drywall something solid to fasten to. The texture matching requirement doesn't change based on size, though. Even a tiny spot repair on a textured wall needs the finish to match.
Can ceiling drywall be repaired, or does the whole section have to be replaced?
Most ceiling repairs are patchable. The exception is when the damage is extensive or when there's been ongoing moisture -- in that case, the wet drywall has to come out entirely. Ceiling work is harder than wall work because gravity fights you on every coat of mud. It takes longer, and the texture matching is trickier. But yes, a water stain ring, a crack along a seam, or a hole from a fixture removal are all repairable without replacing the whole ceiling.
How do I know if there's mold behind the damaged drywall?
You often can't tell from the surface alone. If the damage came from water -- a leak, a drip from upstairs, condensation -- there's a real chance of mold growth on the paper backing or the framing behind it. The only way to know is to open it up and look. I check the framing and the back face of any water-damaged drywall I remove. If there's mold present, that has to be addressed before the patch goes in.
How many coats of mud does a drywall patch actually need?
At minimum, three -- a fill coat, a tape coat, and a finish coat -- with full drying time between each. Rushing this is the most common reason DIY repairs show through paint. Each coat shrinks slightly as it dries, so what looks smooth wet will often show the seam once it's dry. A proper repair takes patience. I'd rather come back a second day to do the finish coat correctly than leave you with a patch that bubbles in six months.
Will the texture on my patch match the rest of my wall?
That's the whole job. Matching existing texture is the hardest part of drywall repair and the piece most people underestimate. Orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, and popcorn all require different spray pressures, dilutions, and application techniques. I've matched texture in homes across Denver and the Front Range -- older homes with original finishes, remodels where half the wall is new, and everything in between. If the texture doesn't match, the repair isn't done. Full stop.
